First entry

This has been one of the longest weeks ever. Medved's illness came up so quickly. I feel guilty about not paying closer attention to him after I gave him a piece of carrot on Friday night because he hadn't come out of the igloo yet. Was this an early sign of the lethargy that would grow, or was it just him being a sleepy bear like he often was? This has been haunting me since Sunday around 2:20. I also feel bad that I didn't spend more time with him and the others earlier. It's not like I was neglectful, but I still wish I had been there more. I'm trying not to make the same mistake again.

Both Alex and I have been letting Fluffhead run around a lot while he is quarantined for possible URI. It's tougher with Hermes. He's in another room, and the door must be closed at all times in case Fluffhead does have an URI. He also has been hanging out in the igloo, never really leaving it. It makes me wonder if all the times Fluffhead was biting and wrangling him, it was to get him moving around and not just living a sedentary lifestyle. He also may be depressed, and he is definitely terrified that in less than a week his living situation went from two other guinea pigs to being all by himself. It's funny, we always thought he'd be all right on his own. Maybe he is.

The whole idea for starting this blog was from a reddit post asking advise from older users. One said to keep a diary because all the things you are sure you will remember slowly begin to fade. I've already encountered some of this; so I realized a diary's importance. It is just difficult because whenever I write anything it seems so insignificant, but I guess to future me it won't be. So here you go future Greg.

I really want to put some things down about Medved so that I will always have an account:
  • He was my little baby bear.
  • His smallness made him incredibly cute.
  • He had the funniest walk you've ever seen, and he always made the loudest "weh weh weh whes" whenever he was out walking.
  • He loved adventures.
  • In the Campbell Ranch apartment, he used to love to run through the living and dining rooms around the kitchen.
  • In the Campbell Ranch apartment he also would always run straight to Nick's room because he loved to explore under the futon and the other off limits areas.
  • There are two recorded instances of a guinea on the loose. Once up in Mesa while I was reading on the bed Alex came in and said there was a guinea out. I knew this was impossible, but sure enough there was a Medved sitting besides me next to the bed. The second was when Nick thought all the guineas were in the cage and couldn't find Medved. As soon as he asked where he was, out came Medved. We don't know how he got out either time.
  • He didn't just walk funny; he also is the only guinea pig I've seen gallop.
  • Alex and I called him a little Buddha bear because he was always cool with everything. Nothing ever got to him; he always remained calm.
  • When Alex would give the guinea call ("Guinea x12, Guineas" really quickly), he would run away from the cage to me saying "Daddy, Daddy, Daddy, it's time for food," as I brought in the last bowl.
  • He also had the loudest meep of all the guineas.
  • Alex always called him platypus feet/butt because of his funny shape
  • He was the only guinea pig I've seen that could make fists. This made it particularly hard to cut his nails as did how dark the nails were.
  • He also had a little proboscis nose that would stick out and he could move.
  • He also had a ridiculously small and cute mouth.
  • He looked like an otter upside down.
  • He had a little tummy, which is why he was given little tummies. Nick eventually made it so he would accept having his tummy touched when he climbed real high to get treats.
  • He and Fluffhead were best friends and soul mates. They would share so many adventures. It makes me sad to see Fluffhead lying in the spot where he last saw Medved.
  • He was very small and sickly when we got him, but he grew up to be very strong in spirit. He greatly overcame any physical or health short comings.
  • He used to run up to peoples' necks when we first got him.
  • One of the earliest memories of him is when he fell asleep on Austin with both his feet hanging out.
  • My very first memory is seeing Alex hold him and how he seemed to fit into one of her hands. I didn't want to hold him because I thought we didn't need another guinea pig. I was convinced to hold him, and I said, "uh-oh" because I knew he would be coming home with us.
